Electrical building services design
Electrical distribution and lighting planned as part of the coordinated building design.
01
Distribution and building requirements
Electrical design starts with the building use, the expected systems and the information available from the wider engineering team. TAFY considers power distribution, interior and exterior lighting and low-current installations as connected parts of the building services design. Circuit sizing and protection arrangements are coordinated with the needs of the project.
Electrical requirements need to be considered alongside mechanical equipment, water systems and fire protection interfaces. Understanding those relationships helps establish the inputs for distribution and the placement of technical equipment. The project scope should distinguish the required design work from information supplied by other specialists.
02
Routes, equipment and interfaces
Electrical routes and distribution boards require space and access. Their location must be coordinated with architecture, structure and other installations. Earthing and lightning protection also form part of the design considerations described in the project brief.
Layouts and technical documentation should communicate the engineering arrangement clearly to the design and delivery teams. BIM review can support coordination of distribution routes and identify conflicts, while calculations and equipment selection remain part of the electrical engineering work. Access for operation and maintenance should be considered when reviewing the arrangement.
03
Preparing an electrical design enquiry
Share the architectural plans, building use, approximate area and project stage. Identify the expected equipment, other engineering disciplines and any existing electrical installation information. For refurbishment, explain the planned changes and the systems that must remain in use.
For quotations or tenders, include the required deliverables, available documents and submission deadline. These inputs help clarify the electrical design scope, interfaces and next steps before detailed work is agreed.
Scope to discuss
- Electrical power distribution
- Interior and exterior lighting
- Low-current systems and circuit coordination
- Earthing, lightning protection and MEP interfaces
Design questions
Can electrical routes be coordinated in BIM?
Yes. Model review supports spatial coordination with other disciplines while electrical calculations and technical design define the system itself.
What should a refurbishment enquiry include?
Describe the existing installation, planned building changes, equipment requirements and any information about systems that need to remain operational.
Your project
Let’s clarify your project brief.
Describe the building, project stage and engineering services you need. We can discuss the input information, scope and next steps.
