Fire protection systems design

Fire protection installations coordinated with the building fire strategy and other engineering disciplines.

01

Systems within the building design

TAFY integrates fire detection, alarm and suppression installations into the overall building services project. Hydrant and sprinkler solutions, together with interfaces to smoke control and electrical supply, are considered in relation to the building fire strategy and the other design disciplines.

The building use, project stage and available fire strategy information shape the engineering scope. Requirements should be clarified with the responsible project team before detailed system decisions are made. The design brief needs to explain which systems are included and where responsibility sits for connected information.

02

Interfaces and coordination

Fire protection systems must be considered alongside the building layout, structural constraints, plant areas and other installation routes. Coordination reviews address equipment positions, distribution zones, access and system interfaces. These decisions need clear communication between the disciplines involved.

BIM review can help make spatial conflicts visible and support coordinated layouts. It complements the technical design and documentation required for the systems. The aim is a coherent arrangement that supports the protection of occupants, access to equipment and the intended interaction of installations within the agreed project scope.

03

Preparing a fire protection enquiry

Share the building type, architectural plans, project stage and any available fire strategy or related requirements. Identify the systems you want to discuss and the work already carried out by other specialists. For an existing building, include known installation information and planned alterations.

For tender work, include the scope, deliverables and deadline. The initial discussion clarifies the input information and the interfaces with the wider team. Approval responsibilities and project requirements need to be established for the particular building and jurisdiction.

Scope to discuss

Design questions

Is fire protection considered together with MEP?

Yes. Fire protection installations have spatial and operational interfaces with architecture and other services, which need to be coordinated within the project scope.

What should the brief include?

Building information, available fire strategy, requested systems, project stage and responsibilities for related specialist work.
