Plumbing & water systems design
Water distribution and drainage systems designed around the building and its use.
01
Water supply and drainage
TAFY designs cold and hot water networks, wastewater drainage and rainwater evacuation as part of the coordinated building services project. Building use, available connection information and the intended operation of the spaces provide the starting point for network sizing and equipment selection.
The design needs to account for distribution routes, technical spaces and the relationship between water systems and the wider building. New buildings and refurbishments have different starting conditions. Existing network information and planned changes help define the scope and the assumptions that need to be confirmed.
02
Coordination and maintainability
Plumbing routes interact with structure, architecture, electrical installations and HVAC equipment. Coordinated layouts help the team understand those interfaces and discuss feasible routing. Equipment and access requirements should be considered along with the distribution network, rather than added after the layout has been fixed.
Responsible water use, reliable operation and maintenance access are design objectives. Drawings, technical calculations and specifications connect those objectives with the selected arrangement. Where BIM models are part of the project, they can support review of pipework, equipment locations and clashes with other systems.
03
Information for a plumbing enquiry
Provide the building type, location, project stage and architectural plans. Include available utility or existing installation information, the spaces being served and the intended changes. For refurbishment, identify retained networks and any known access constraints.
For a quotation or tender, describe the required engineering disciplines and deliverables. The initial review clarifies the input information, the interfaces with other teams and the design decisions that remain open.
Scope to discuss
- Cold and hot water networks
- Wastewater drainage
- Rainwater evacuation
- Pipework and equipment coordination
Design questions
How is plumbing coordinated with other services?
Routes, equipment and access are reviewed with architecture, structure and the other installations, using drawings or BIM models according to the project scope.
What information helps with an existing building?
Existing installation drawings, available utility information, planned alterations and access constraints help establish the scope and assumptions.
